Submucosal Uterine Fibroids & Risks for Infertility

Womens Health Care

Uterine fibroids have long been known to cause severe gynecological complications in women who struggle with them. If you are having difficulty in becoming pregnant, and if you’ve had a prior history of uterine fibroids, your fertility complications may be associated with the fibroids even if they are no longer a heath concern for you. When meeting with a doctor to discuss your options for treatment, it is important to provide all information about uterine fibroids you may have had, especially if those fibroids were submucosal in nature.

Submucosal uterine fibroids are rare but are the most common cause of infertility that is difficult to treat. Because submucosal uterine fibroids develop inside the uterine wall, any slight development may cause your body to naturally begin to fight the presence of a fibroid as a foreign body. When the body’s natural defense mechanisms set it, you will find that pregnancy is much more difficult to achieve and, when achieved, your pregnancy may be classified as high risk due to the potential uterine complications when a submucosal fibroid is present.

Hormonal changes, changes in fluid composition, and even the development of scar tissue are all complications that arise from uterine fibroids. But, with submucosal uterine fibroids, the complications can be more severe as the treatment of this type of rare fibroids is far more difficult to diagnose and locate. With ultrasound technology, and routine gynecological testing, most doctors can identify the complication existed.

Once you’ve treated for submucosal uterine fibroids, and even after the complication has resolved, there may still be long term fertility complications to come. Be certain, therefore, that you let your doctor know what complications you’ve had and be sure, as part of your infertility treatment, which your doctor checks to determine if scar tissue is a possible complication for your fertility.

Infertility can be attributed to a variety of health complications that are both current and from years past. In the case of uterine fibroids, even when treated, there can be long term complications that can make conceiving a very complex process. Be sure you are familiar with all of the risks associated with infertility and let your doctor know if you’ve struggled with submucosal uterine fibroids.
